Lincoln’s Birthday, February 12, 2017
““Every man is said to have his peculiar ambition,” declared Abraham Lincoln in announcing his first political campaign in 1832. “Whether it be true or not, I can say for one that I have no other so great as that of being truly esteemed of my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem. How far I shall succeed in gratifying this ambition, is yet to be developed.”1 Fourteen years later, Lincoln wrote: “With me, the race of ambition has been a failure — a flat failure.”2 He was then 37 years old.”
